Lucky in Love
by Kasie West
Release Date: July 25th 2017
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance
In this new contemporary from YA star Kasie West, a girl who wins the lottery learns that money can cause more problems than it solves, especially when love comes into the picture.
Maddie doesn’t believe in luck. She’s all about hard work and planning ahead. But one night, on a whim, she buys a lottery ticket. And then, to her astonishment —
In a flash, Maddie’s life is unrecognizable. No more stressing about college scholarships. Suddenly, she’s talking about renting a yacht. And being in the spotlight at school is fun… until rumors start flying, and random people ask her for loans. Now, Maddie isn’t sure who she can trust.
Except for Seth Nguyen, her funny, charming coworker at the local zoo. Seth doesn’t seem aware of Maddie’s big news. And, for some reason, she doesn’t want to tell him. But what will happen if he learns her secret?
With tons of humor and heart, Kasie West delivers a million-dollar tale of winning, losing, and falling in love.
What would you do if you won the lottery?
Maddie is a straight-laced and focused senior who has most of her life already figured out, she has a pact with her two best friends that they won’t date till college. She has parents that fight nonstop due to her dad being unemployed, and a brother who may or may not be returning to college after the summer. The bright spot in her hectic life is her job at the Zoo, where she works with her crush Seth.
Her life changes on the night of her 18th birthday when she buys a lottery ticket after her friends fail to show up for her birthday party. The only highlight for her birthday night is that she runs into Seth at the store after she buys her ticket. After realizing that she won the lottery the next day Maddie’s life takes a path that she never saw coming. They say that money changes things and for Maddie that is true, but deep down she is still the same girl she has always been. Of course after she wins and people find out, things change for her, not only do her friends act different, but through a little peer pressure she may start to do things that she normally would not.
There were several things that I actually liked about this story, such as Maddie’s focus and her friendships and of course her love for working at the zoo, even after she wins. But there were a few things that turned out to be predictable as well, such as a new popularity, a bit of peer pressure to spend, and being taken advantage of by someone you would not expect it from.
One of the bright spots for this book for me was her relationship with Seth. He was a great addition to the story. Of course with all relationships there were some snags, but in the end Seth was exactly the wakeup call that Maddie needed for a lot of things in her life. Seth and the zoo were probably my favorite parts of the story with Maddie, because it was the one aspect that the money did not really change for her.
By the end of the book I was happy to see that Maddie realized what she needed to do, although part of it came too late for her, but all in all the ending was about what I expected. Maddie got to choose how to proceed in her life where the money and her future were concerned with no outside influences that were bad. All in all a great story about the changes that face anyone who wins as much money as she did, and really what you would think would happen when people find out.
I do have to admit that I did think of all the things I would do and buy if I won that much money. What would you do?
